At just 14, Akesi has endured more agony than most people experience in a lifetime. What began as a small blister on her right leg at age six quickly caused her knee to bend backward abnormally. The painful back knee, scientifically known as genu recurvatum, made walking unbearable.
“The devastating pain forced me to drop out of school and abandon my dream of becoming a nurse," she recounts. The teenager says the emotional toll was overpowering.
"I endure mocking stares and ridicule because I can't help my mother in the kitchen, carry water or even go to the field," Akesi shares her agony.
For years, her mother, Jenifa, felt helpless. However, hope arrived when a Cure Malawi medical team visited their rural community and referred Akesi to Beit-Cure International Children Hospital in Blantyre for a life-changing surgery.
Using a metal frame, two orthopaedic surgeons straightened and stabilised her leg. The doctors guided the bones into proper alignment, offering the girl a pain-free future. Today, Akesi is on the path to healing, thanks to the treatment.
Globe Internet covered the cost of the surgery and critical care she needed to walk back to school and achieve her dreams. The ICT firm also sponsored her transport from discharge to recovery. This helped the patient and her mother to make a five-hour journey the family could not afford when Akesi needed care. "I'm speechless. What you have done for me and my daughter means a lot to us," he said. says Jenifah.
Though healing continues, Akesi's leg has completely straightened and she is relearning to walk.
Globe Internet business development manager Mike Mkuntha said they are thrilled to have been part of Akesi's journey to recovery.
"It is moments like these that remind us why we do what we do. Seeing the smile on Akesi's face and the relief in her mother's eyes is all the reward we need bringing life to the community we serve as we continue bringing the world closer,” he said.
Mkuntha saluted Beit- Cure Hospital for their dedication and care, saying he cannot wait to see the wonders Akesi will achieve beyond the path to full recovery.
"The money isn't what brought life and happy faces. It is our joint effort to serve our communities," he said.
Globe Internet's corporate social responsibility initiatives focus on three strategic pathways: Health, education and environment.
"We shall continue serving our communities in these areas. Our goal is to deliver at least one activity bringing or programme biannually," said Mkuntha.
Stepping into a brighter future and limitless possibilities that once looked impossibilities, Akesi can stand tall, walk without pain and dream big.
